Dr. Willard Hollander Collection

HollanderAnyone who speaks genetics cannot leave out the name of one of the pigeon fancy’s elite genetic experts, Willard F. Hollander. Dr. Hollander was born April 15, 1913 in Madison Wisconsin. Doc, as many called him, was an icon in the pigeon world wherever he went. His studies are known today all over the world. He made a huge impact in the genetics in mice, chickens, ducks, doves, and spent many years working with pigeons. He played a big part in the success of the book written by Wendell Levi, The Pigeon. Hollander actually wrote and illustrated the entire chapter on genetics. He obtained his PHD at the University of Wisconsin working with Professor L.J. Cole, who also had an interest in pigeons.

Since his death in 2004, the World of Wings has been in contact with the family working out arrangements to acquire Doc Hollander’s collection for the Museum in Oklahoma City. Hollander’s entire collection arrived at the Center in January, 2006. It was shortly thereafter that the World of Wings, (AHPI) received a substantial cash donation from the Hollander family dedicated in his name, to the only public pigeon library in the USA. W.F. Hollander had been a life time member of the AHPI since the early 70’s.
